Russia’s Foreign Ministry has expelled 40 German diplomats just weeks after Berlin announced its decision to expel the same number of Russian diplomatic staff.
According to Skz News, in a statement the ministry said it had taken the decision to declare the staff “persona non grata” after Germany declared “undesirable” a “significant number” of officials at the Russian embassy in Berlin.
Earlier this month, the German Foreign Ministry announced its decision to expel 40 Russian diplomats, as Moscow is being charged with war crimes.
The country’s foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, said the images taken by the Ukrainian city of Bucha showed “an intent to destroy that goes beyond all borders”, before adding that further measures were being prepared.
Several other EU countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, also demanded that Russian diplomats leave their countries.
