US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Russia could attack Ukraine suddenly, but said he expected strong reactions if it did.
The US Secretary of State made the remarks a day after visiting the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, where tensions and anxiety over a possible invasion have been running high for months. Strongly emphasizing close US-Ukraine relations, Blinken vowed not to give up strong diplomatic efforts to stop Russian aggression.
Blinken: If Russian military forces cross the Ukrainian border and carry out new acts of aggression against Ukraine, they will receive a swift, tough and united response from the United States, our allies and partners. Russia is endangering the foundations of the world order by gathering about 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. It will face a coordinated and tough global response in case it invades Ukraine.
Blinken said Russia’s actions against Ukraine are an attempt to overthrow international norms and are just the latest violation among some that Moscow has undertaken in violation of countless other international treaties, agreements and commitments, to the detriment of sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries.
“If we allow Russia to violate these principles with impunity, it would pull us all back to much more dangerous and uncertain times, when this continent, and this city, were divided in two, divided by “Neutral land in the middle where soldiers were patrolling, with the threat of a frontal war that fluctuated over everyone’s lives,” he said. “It would also send a message to others around the world that these principles are not inviolable.” According to some reports, Moscow is sending more troops to the border with Ukraine.
