Moscow said it had heard the message from Washington, which imposed new sanctions on some Russian officials over the poisoning of opposition politician Alexei Navalny, and said it planned to respond through a “detention list” for US citizens.
“Given how (the US) is behaving now and how they have published all the sanctions lists, I think we will also surprise them soon. “We are working on this,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Washington announced on March 2 that it had sanctioned seven Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin’s deputy chief of staff. The U.S. said the sanctions came after US intelligence agencies concluded that Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) was behind Navalny’s poisoning. The poisoning occurred in August last year.
Navalny was arrested in January in Moscow after arriving from Germany, where he was treated for poisoning with nerve agent Novichok. He blames President Putin for ordering the poisoning.
The European Union has also sanctioned four senior Russian officials for poisoning Putin and imprisoning him.
Navalny was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for an earlier case involving misappropriation of funds. He said that the case against him is politically motivated.
