Russia on Wednesday introduced mandatory medical examinations and fingerprinting for foreigners, measures that were immediately opposed by the opposition.
Under the new law, detailed medical examinations will be required every three months, starting next year, including blood tests.
Russia’s foreign ministry has said it will seek “favorable terms” for foreign members of the media and their families.
The German-Russian Chamber of Commerce has warned that these measures could have an impact on the Russian economy.
If business representatives are included in this measure, there is a risk that “foreign managers, important to Russia, will leave this country to a large extent.”
This institution has called on the Russian Government to soften the rules. Under the new rule, foreigners must be tested for tuberculosis, syphilis and HIV.
The results must be sent to the Russian immigration authorities and the provision of fingerprints is mandatory.
Anyone who refuses to implement the decision risks refusing a work permit. The new rules apply to all foreigners and their families, including children over 6 years old.
Russian authorities have said the new procedures will benefit the state. It is not yet clear whether foreign nationals should leave Russia or face any consequences if the results show they have any illness.
