The Russian military is focusing its bombing campaign on one of Ukraine’s key cities, Kharkiv, as taking Kiev is turning into a real challenge for Moscow.
At least 10 people were killed and 35 others were injured when rockets hit the Opera House, a concert hall and government offices in the city’s main square.
President Volodymyr Zelensky openly accused Moscow of committing war crimes in his country’s second largest city. Shortly afterwards, Russian paratroopers were launched over Kharkiv, intensifying efforts to capture it, but in the areas where they landed, they encountered immediate resistance.
In Kiev immediately, the night was relatively calm, although the alarm sirens sounded occasionally. This morning, you could even hear the wind blowing between the buildings, something unimaginable for days, says the BBC correspondent there, James Waterhouse.
After Tuesday’s bombings, Zelenscu once again addressed his citizens, trying to raise the morale of the people who in these 7 days have experienced much more than they have experienced in the 30 years since the declaration of independence. The Ukrainian head of state spoke about the attack on the television tower that took 5 lives, as well as the blowing up of the Holocaust memorial in the capital.
“History has repeated itself with this attack. What does it mean to say “never again” for 80 years, while the world is silent before the bombs dropped on Babyn Yar?
The Babyn Yar the president is talking about is the largest Holocaust mass grave in Europe, where more than 70,000 people, mostly Jews, were shot dead by the Nazis. The Russian military now appears to be focusing on capturing the southern city of Kherson, a strategic move that would allow it to establish a military base as it tries to push deeper into Ukrainian territory as it prepares to take Mariupol. which would create a kind of ground bridge for Russian forces to be able to move freely from Russian and Crimean soil.
With US President Joe Biden announcing that the United States will close its airspace to Russian aircraft, the number of countries closing their skies to Russia has risen sharply following Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
