US President Joe Biden on Thursday announced a new $ 800 million arms package to Ukraine.
“Today I am announcing an additional $ 800 million in aid to Ukraine so that they can withstand the attack in the Donbas region. “This new package includes heavy artillery, drones and other ammunition.”said Biden.
Biden said the concentration of Russian aggression in the east has made it even more important to send weapons from the West to Ukraine.
“The US and its allies are acting swiftly to send the Ukrainians the weapons they need.”he further added.
The US president also announced a special $ 500 million tranche of US aid to the Ukrainian government.
“In addition to strengthening Ukraine’s resistance on the battlefield, we are also demonstrating our support for the people of Ukraine. “Today, the United States is announcing that we intend to provide an additional $ 500 million in direct economic assistance to the Ukrainian government.” said Biden.
The new aid boosts overall U.S. economic support for Ukraine to $ 1 billion in the nearly two months since Russia invaded, President Biden said. He announced that the US would ban Russian-linked ships from anchoring in US ports.
“No ship flying the Russian flag, or owned or operated by Russian interests, will be allowed to anchor in our ports or enter the shores of the country.”
Biden said the move is another critical step the U.S. was taking along with its allies in Canada and Europe to deny Russia the benefits of the international economic system they enjoyed in the past.
