Russia sent nuclear-capable bombers to patrol Belarus this Saturday, as the crisis with Ukraine continues.
The bombers, which took part in a patrol in Belarus, Russia’s ally, have long-range nuclear capabilities.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said two Tu-22M3 bombers were conducting exercises with the Belarusian air force and air defense assets during a four-hour mission.
Russia has carried out similar patrols in the past against Belarus, a country bordering Ukraine to the north.
This patrol mission comes at a time when the Kremlin has moved troops from Siberia to the Far East of Belarus for joint exercises, reports REL. This deployment coincides with the Russian military gathering near Ukraine, which has fueled fears in the West that Moscow may be preparing to invade Ukraine.
Russia denies having plans to attack Ukraine, but calls on the United States and its allies not to admit Ukraine to NATO. The Kremlin also demands that the NATO military alliance not expand eastward.
The West has called on Russia to withdraw more than 100,000 troops it has deployed near Ukraine, but the Kremlin has responded that it can deploy its troops wherever it wants inside Russian territory.
In addition to assembling troops near Ukraine, Russia has also conducted a series of military exercises from the Arctic to the Black Sea.
The deployment of Russian troops in Belarus raised concerns in the West, which said it feared Moscow might be preparing to attack Ukraine from the north.
The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, is located just 75 kilometers from the border with Belarus.
