Russian nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky has suggested military bombing of Ukraine on New Year’s Eve, when many people may be drunk.
The Russian parliamentarian and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia made the remarks on December 27 during a television broadcast, as the West viewed with concern Russian troops near Ukraine, and as something that could result in state occupation.
Zhirinovsky, who is known for his harsh comments, told Channel One that if he were president, he would bomb Ukraine between December 31 and January 1 at 4 am when “everyone is drunk” ”.
“Someone should punish them, someone should intimidate them,” he said a day after suggesting that Russia should annex all of Ukraine.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyroz, also known for his tough leadership in Russia’s Caucasus region, said on December 26 that he was ready to help annex Ukraine.
“Ukraine must be annexed to our state, this is our territory,” Kadyrov said.
This harsh rhetoric was reported after the United States and European allies accuse Russia of threatening a possible invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has already invaded Crimea and is backing separatists in eastern Ukraine who have been fighting for nearly eight years.
Russia has denied any wrongdoing, accusing Ukraine and NATO of provocations.
