The first Russian soldier to appear in court for war crimes in Ukraine, Vadim Shishimarin, today while in court in Kiev, apologized to a woman who had killed her husband during the fighting.
“Yes, I admit my guilt. “I understand that you will not be able to forgive me, but I’m sorry,” said Shishimarin.
He also said he felt “ashamed”.
The affected woman, on the other hand, expressed her irritation at the Russian soldier’s apology and addressed him: “Have you come to protect us? By whom? Did you protect me from the man you killed? ”
“We were ordered to come with the column, I did not know what would happen,” said Shishimarin.
This is the first Ukrainian war crimes trial to be held since Russia invaded the country on February 24. The 21-year-old soldier pleaded guilty Wednesday to shooting a 62-year-old unarmed civilian in Ukraine’s Sumy region on the fourth day of the war and is facing a life sentence.
The trial was postponed to Wednesday because many members of the media were filling the courtroom. The trial has been moved to a larger court in Kiev.
