Moscow has lost “its offensive potential” and is being forced to call in reinforcements from “deep areas of Russia” amid withdrawal from major battles and major desertions, Ukrainian officials say.
In the latest update of the information, the Ukrainian army says that the Moscow forces have been repulsed by Makariv, a strategically important suburb of Kiev, and thanks to the heroic actions of its defenders, the Ukrainian flag is now flying over this city.
The recapture of Makariv, about 60 kilometers west of Kiev, could prevent the siege of the capital from the northwest by Russian forces. A counterattack was also launched by Ukrainian forces in the south, forcing Russian forces to withdraw to their unwanted borders in the direction of Mykolaiv, a town near the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian institute, the Center for Defense Strategies, also claims that Russian troops in the Okhtyrka region of Sumy have left the area of operation and have chosen to desert because they do not want to die on the battlefield. The Russians are also reported to have stolen cars to travel to the border with Belarus. In another blow to him, Putin lost his fifth colonel and 15th senior commander since the invasion of Ukraine, Alexei Sharov.
Russia, British media say, is suffering the biggest massacre of its military leadership since World War II. As of March 2, Russia has not updated the official figure for its losses in Ukraine of 500 killed and 1,600 wounded, although various reports indicate that they are higher than Moscow claims.
