Scholz in Washington: US-Germany “closest allies”

President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed the tense situation on Ukraine’s border with Russia, where some 100,000 Russian troops have been deployed.

A key point of contention between Washington and Berlin is the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which will bring Russian natural gas directly to Germany.

After the meeting, US President Joe Biden said that if Russian tanks and troops cross the border and invade Ukraine, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project between Russia and Germany will not continue.

Olaf Scholz, who was on his first official visit to the White House as German chancellor, said Germany had agreed with allies and partners, including the United States, on “far-reaching measures”.

“We will take all the necessary steps. I assure you that there will be no measure to which we will have a different approach. We will act together. ” Said the German chancellor.

Scholz is not clear on Nord Stream 2

Asked specifically about Nord Stream 2, Chancellor Scholz did not explicitly say the project would be stopped, but reiterated his message of solidarity with Ukraine and NATO countries.

Biden praised the close ties between Washington and Berlin, adding that both sides were “working with one step” to prevent Russian aggression.

Diplomatic efforts to calm the crisis in Ukraine

Scholz’s visit to Washington comes on a busy day with diplomacy over the Ukraine crisis. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock paid a visit to Kiev, while French President Emmanuel Macron met with President Putin in Moscow.

After his visit to Washington, Chancellor Scholz will hold talks today (February 8) in Berlin with French President Macron and Polish President Andrzej Duda. The German chancellor has invited two other European leaders to “discuss in particular the situation in and around Ukraine,” said government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffman.
