President Joe Biden’s reaction to Russia and its threats to invade Ukraine is viewed with skepticism by a group of Republican senators, who are convinced that Vladimir Putin should have been given a harsher response.
“Historically, wars have been easy to start and difficult to end. “This is why the threat of sanctions is not enough to deter Vladimir Putin and prevent him from further invading Ukraine,” said Senator John Cornyn at a news conference in the Capitol.
“Even promises of financial aid to Ukrainians are not enough to deter Putin. “Our bipartisan goal must be to contain Putin and make him think twice before considering the possibility of invading Ukraine.” Republican senators from the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee are also part of this group.
Senators Kevin Cramer, Roger Wicker and Rob Portman were part of a bipartisan congressional delegation that traveled to Kiev to meet with Ukrainian officials this week to reinforce US support for Ukraine and its defense needs.
A group of bipartisan senators also had a virtual meeting with President Biden earlier to discuss US policy toward Ukraine. Republicans say last week’s failure of Sen. Ted Cruz’s bill on sanctions against Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline was a step backwards in efforts to curb Putin’s intent to invade Ukraine.
