Shaip Kamberi, the only ethnic Albanian member of the newly elected Serbian parliament, called on Belgrade to impose sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine.
Serbia is the only country in Europe, apart from Belarus, that has not yet taken such a step, despite constant calls from the European Union.
Even a recent poll showed Vladimir Putin as the leader most liked by the Serbs.
“The creation of the Parliament and the new government of Serbia must be accompanied by sanctions against Russia, in accordance with the foreign policy of the European Union”, Kamberi wrote on his Facebook profile.
He added that as a representative of the Albanian Coalition for the Presheva Valley, he is working to create a parliamentary group with other opposition and minority parties, and even issued a warning, saying that if his proposal for sanctions is not accepted, he will not to vote for the new legislature.
Serbia’s general elections took place in April, but Kamberi won his seat in parliament only last week after a fifth repeat election round.
The initial results of the April 3 elections were disappointing for the Albanians who lost all three seats won in the previous elections.
With Kamber’s victory, the list of Albanians secured a mandate in the Parliament of Serbia, which is actually an opposition vote, the only one that can speak directly on behalf of the Albanian national minority.
