Two cargo ships have collided in the Baltic Sea, in the waters between the Danish island of Bornholm and the southern Swedish city of Ystad.
Authorities have launched a search-and-rescue operation after at least two people are missing, Swedish and Danish authorities announced. The ship, Karin Hoej, registered in Denmark has capsized.
There were two people on board and none of them is being found. The BBC says that in the icy waters, screams were heard, but no one was found yet.
The other ship, registered in Britain, the Scot Carrier, is operational and its staff is safe.
“I can confirm that an accident happened, but I do not know the circumstances“, Said Soren Hoj, director of the company, Rederiet Hoj, which owns the ship, Karin Hoej.
On the other hand, the spokesman of the Danish Meteorological Institute, said that at the time when the ships collided there was fog.
The accident happened around 3am. Civilian ships in the vicinity are also assisting in the rescue operation.
