Shocking images were published today by the American media of the devastation from tornadoes involving five US states, killing dozens of people.
Satellite imagery taken Saturday by monstrous storms showed flattened buildings in the town of Mayfield, a town of 10,000 in western Kentucky.
Remains of destroyed buildings and fallen trees filled the ground, and pieces of metal and damaged vehicles were seen on the streets.
The images captured the wreckage of the candle factory where 110 people were working before the splash storm hit.
Kentucky Traffic Police Chief Sarah Burgess said rescue teams were using heavy machinery to move the wreckage. Forensics have been called to the scene but the exact number of victims has not yet been determined.
Kentacky Gov. Andy Beshear said there will be more deaths confirmed in the coming days.
No one has been found alive since Saturday morning but search efforts have continued.
Emergency workers and about 300 National Guard soldiers are searching the wreckage for survival, as well as distributing water and generators to residents.
Beshear said sniffer dogs are being used for wreckage and added that “bodies of victims continue to be found in several locations.
“Nothing that stood in the tornado crossing line is on foot anymore. “Destruction is something I have never seen in my life,” said the governor.
