Dozens of Latin immigrants trying to reach the border with the US have closed their mouths by sewing their lips, in the macabre protest against the Mexican government that does not allow them to cross.
Shocking footage taken by the agency Reuters showed immigrants from Central and South America sewing their lips out of despair with needles and plastic thread in the southern Mexican city of Tapachula.
Immigrants, some of them with children, left a small space in their mouths to allow them to drink fluids.
The photo showed how they used alcohol to disinfect and wipe the blood from the stitches.
“I’m doing it for my daughter,” said Venezuelan immigrant Yorgelis Rivera. “She has not eaten anything in the last few hours and I see no other solution from the authorities.”
“We are here like prisoners.”
Thousands of migrants are arriving in the town of Tapachula on the border with Guatemala for several months, waiting for Mexican authorities to allow them to continue their journey to the US border.
Rivera says he has been waiting for a response for more than a month.
“Immigrants are sewing their lips together in protest. “We hope that the immigration authorities look at us bloody, they are also human beings,” she said.
