The Trade Union Confederation of Northern Macedonia protested in Skopje on Sunday (December 12th) over a pay rise and the adoption of a law on labor relations by the Assembly, which calls for Sunday to be declared a day off.

The trade unionists demand that the minimum wage be increased to 60% of the average wage, as well as that there be a continuous increase of all other wages in accordance with the collective agreements.

“We demand the approval of the amendments to the Law on Labor Relations which declare Sunday a holiday in accordance with the agreement of the Economic and Social Council through social dialogue, amending the Law on Minimum Wage so that the salary is not below 60 percent of salary on average, ie to increase at least to 18,000 denars (300 euros) and to have a solution for the increase of other salaries in accordance with the increase of the minimum wage “, declared the president of the League of Trade Unions, Darko Dimovski.

The union does not rule out the possibility of other measures if their demands are not taken into account, such as calls for a general strike, protests and other forms of expression of dissatisfaction.

A day before the union protest, the Social Democratic League, which leads the government of Northern Macedonia, announced the adoption of the law for Sunday – a holiday until the end of the year, which will enter into force on January 1, 2021.

“We are waiting for the law to be approved in the next session of the Assembly. The Social-Democratic League supports the demands of workers who are in their interest. We want to work together to have more satisfied and productive workers in the job market. This would be for the benefit of all “, said the spokesperson of SDSM, Bogdanka Kuzeska.

Officials of the Government of Northern Macedonia, in some cases announced the increase of the average salary to 18,000 denars, or about 300 euros. At the moment the minimum wage reaches 15,500 denars (260 euros) while the average wage is around 29,000 denars (470 euros).
