A few years ago snail farming was advertised as very lucrative but with dozens of farms opening it quickly went bankrupt and only two survived.
Around 2010 dozens of farmers invested in setting up a snail farm. The lack of market made the number of snail farms go to two. The agriculture expert says that the lack of subsidies from the Ministry of Agriculture wiped out this agricultural sector.
“Farms have been greatly minimized and are no longer called commercial because they are parceled into very small units. Two companies dealing with snail collection and export did not have a very good approach from the schemes of the Ministry of Agriculture. I can say that from 2010-2013 the snail breeding was not treated with interest “.
Agim Ibrahimi from Elbasan says that in 2013 he set up a snail farm, according to him all the farmers who experimented in this sector were deceived by the big traders who intended to sell the snail breeds.
“I cultivated 2 dynyms of land and the investment cost me 6 thousand euros, including seedlings, nets and water. I continued 3-4 years later I signed a contract that I would sell the kilogram of snail for 5 euros, but what happened when I reached the amount that this person who signed the contract wanted told me I will analyze the snail and if not fed good food all the goods will go to waste. Here I did not trust him, consequently I managed to sell only a few kilograms in the premises of Elbasan with 5 thousand old Lekë per kilo ”.
The total weight of snails that Albania exports is only 400 tons, although at first it was presented as a good profitable opportunity for Albanian farmers only two farms managed to secure the market abroad.
