The protest demonstration that former Democratic President Sali Berisha and his supporters organized the evening before in Tirana against the “Open Balkans” project and the visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, took on other colors in the Serbian media.
Their headlines describe an atmosphere of war rather than a rally of discontent.
Journalists in Kosovo published some of the bombastic headlines of what are also known as Vucic newspapers. “Rage in the Tirana protest: Albanian extremists burn Serbian flags”, “Shocking view from Tirana: Atmosphere of lynching and burning of the Serbian flag”, “Rage in Tirana: Protesters burn the Serbian flag”, “Protest in Tirana against the President of Serbia” “Snipers in buildings, extremists plan diversion in Vucic’s column”, were some of these titles.
In fact, the demonstration took place peacefully, with the exception of a few Serbian flags which were burned by small groups of protesters. The Open Balkans Initiative has met with strong opposition from the Kosovo government, while Bosnia and Montenegro, which also views it with skepticism, have refused to join.
