Somalia has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of violating international law by denigrating the Somali government as “temporary” and seeking to sow violence.
The UAE in Saturday’s statement about the latest clashes in the country, also violated bilateral friendship, Somalia’s Information Minister Osman Dubbe said at a press conference in the capital Mogadishu.
“The UAE statement is contrary to international diplomacy, fraternal relations between the two countries and Arab culture,” Dubbe said.
“The UAE wants Somalia to be like Yemen and Libya and it wants to sow population displacement, violence and backwardness, and that is something that Somalis are wary of,” he added.
Commenting on recent clashes between Somali government forces and opposition groups, the UAE statement accused Somalia of using excessive force against civilians and called its government an “interim government”.
Separately, Somalia accused opposition presidential candidates led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of pursuing “illegal” steps under the guise of peaceful protests.
“The presidential candidates chose to go beyond the process by following the path of lawlessness and armed insurgency under the guise of peaceful demonstrations guaranteed by our constitution,” the Somali Foreign Ministry said in a statement, urging unnamed foreign actors not to make statements. “Fraudsters” who sometimes “seem to support uprisings.”
