A woman always waiting for love, Frida Kahlo’s biography written by Hayden Herrera is one of the most inspiring books for women marking an era where feelings of beauty seem to have waned. With a life troubled by great pain Frida, always believed in an inner sparkle turning the sadness into hundreds of canvases she left behind. Published by ‘Dukagjini’ and translated by Ermira Danaj, this biography is one of the books that I would single out in my readings during 2021, as I was trying to wander through the readings of this year that is coming to an end; to feel what memory he had stored.
At the end of a calendar year, today when the National Prizes for Literature are announced by the National Center for Books and Reading, an institution that has restored the dignity of the Albanian book and author, and when an analysis of books, authors and cultural events of the year left behind seems to be missing. The Book Fair 2021 just two weeks ago, despite the desire to be closer to the Albanian author, failed to master it. Market conditions, lack of creativity, new post-pandemic order, state authorities which stay away from books are indicative of a not at all inspiring picture of Albanian literature. Something more than the motivation of an exhausting generation. But this is another story to be told so I do not want to dwell on it now.
A beautiful time awaits us so I would like to list from the section of the book that I share with the public every Sunday evening the titles, which I believe inspire knowledge and love for man and his titanic strength not to give up. But who are they?
“Time for storytelling, dialogue with Alda Bardhyli” by our great writer Ismail Kadare enters those books that we will always want to have in the library. A different story of the writer, in front of a sober researcher, reveals to us exactly the sparkle that he feels in Frida Kahlo’s paintings, which, like in every great artist and inside Kadare, shines. Kadare answers seemingly simple questions that outline the life of a great classic of this century. The most beautiful part of this book are his answers to the simple things in life, or the captions he puts on the famous characters of our literary history starting from Mitrush Kuteli, Petro Marko, Dhimitër Shuteriqi, JusufVrioni, etc.
The third book in my readings this year is one of those books that you can often browse through, as a guide to finding the verses of each season. The return of Ervin Hatib, a character who emancipated Albanian verses after the 90s with a unique nerve and music in his style, was definitely an event. The volume “Transcript from the other bed” has inside some of the deepest darkness only that inside it there is a way out.
When I picked up the latest novel by French writer Gérard de Nerval I did not think it would be one of those books you do not believe you have finally found. “Silvia” is an experience of dreams, obsessions and stupidity but above all of love, of another love in this case, love as an upper gift that not everyone can follow. This is not because of bad luck or good of the follower, but because not everyone understands it and when you do not understand d.th., that you do not have it. And when you do not have it, that is, you can not follow it.
This is the story of Nerval’s turbulent passion for an actress and the further consequence of the madness that engulfed him. This novel has been among the most beloved of Proust and Eco. ‘As one of the original self-proclaimed bohemians, Nerval was well known for possessing to the depths a sensation that seemed to belong to us,’ writes AndreBreton, another well-known French writer. As RenéDaumal used to say that ‘every time I reread Silvia, I feel a shock at the bottom of my stomach that opens the eyes of my heart: I have been observed! I was not alone in this world! ‘
In the genre of memoir, my inspiration will remain the diary of Dh. Shuteriqit “Fletë nga jeta ime” with the beautiful Albanian language that comes to me as pure as the texts of the Frashërllinj. A book that I would greatly appreciate for anyone who would like to share love for the country and its people. Determined to propose it as a book that should be included in the curriculum of the Albanian school, especially in the upper grades of the 9-year-old.
“Free” by LeaYpi, a character who shone with her story in the English-speaking world, is another important reading of 2021. With a simple narration she manages to discover a gloomy Albania during communism and at the same time invites you to travel to a world of memories that resembles so much everyone’s memories. This story is a moral confrontation with the past which politics itself, the Albanian society has not yet been able to do. Not to forget and to look back in time, to learn from the past and to build a better future, remains a distant dream of Albanian intellectuals in the late ’90s who, without any fear I can say , who could not do it. So he raises the question aloud; why is the historical memory of a country important? Because remembrance days, books written about him, visits to memorial sites can provide you with a broader understanding of what human rights really are. Dashnor Kaloci’s book “Kadare in the documents of the Palace of Dreams” remains among others in this genre a choice that travels the history of Albanian totalitarianism in literature helping us to understand how important it is to create a world with a room for all.
