The U.S. military has been forced to deny that an advanced aircraft with nuclear material on board crashed yesterday, killing at least four people on board in the California desert.
But fears have been heightened about the spread of hazardous materials from the board of the aircraft, as a fifth person was lost in the crash.
The plane crashed near the ’78 Highway’ in the Imperila County area of the California Desert at noon yesterday.
Numerous emergency teams rushed to the remote location. Some of the media said that the four killed in the accident were US Marines.
Air Force spokeswoman Sarah Marshall said the collision involved the MV-22B Osprey rotary propeller aircraft.
The military has denied reports that it had nuclear material on board following speculation on social media.
Footage posted online showed smoke rising from the vehicle’s burnt-out wreckage.
The causes of the accident are still unknown.
