The Socialist Party has proposed Bajram Bega as a candidate for the new head of state. The news was given by the Prime Minister Edi Rama after the meeting of the leadership in the pink headquarters, where he said that the Socialists propose the Chief of the Armed Forces, Bajram Begaj among 26 other candidacies.
Edi Rama: We have completed the selection process of the candidacy that we will take to the Assembly to vote for the new president of the Republic of Albania. Today the process is completed by making available all the candidacies proposed by the parliamentary group with envelopes. The candidacies were divided into 3 groups, it was immediately excluded and the block proposed by the parliamentary group was not put on the table. The block of candidacies has been removed, which are all very honorable men and women, but who belong to this political family and have had political activity in the SP that we have said before, today we have re-discussed and agreed that the SP belongs to see and go beyond himself at this moment because he must give Albanians a head of state who does not have a political career in the SP, but who radiates that normality, that citizenship and that kindness that citizens need today and we are focused on the third bloc, which has had 26 candidacies to reach the conclusion that will support Bajram Bega, the current Chief of the Armed Forces to be President of the Republic of Albania.
Asked if General Bajram Begaj is aware of the proposal, the head of government said he is expected to call the general and have a meeting this afternoon if he is in town.
Raman: The Chief of General Staff is one of the candidacies proposed by the SP group. I was not one of the proposers. It was a completely open discussion with a positive spirit and sense of responsibility which we need in our internal meetings. I’m sorry that many people within the SP by the Secretary General were positively disappointed. I will call him and have an appointment with him tonight if he is in town.
Chief of General Staff Bajram Begaj could be Ilir Meta’s successor and head the state for the next five years. This proposal was a surprise, as in the list of possible candidacies the favorites were Majlinda Bregu and Ardian Dvorani. Tomorrow at 10 will be the meeting of the SP parliamentary group. The parliamentary committee on laws will then convene to draft a report that will go to the assembly and at 18:00 will be voted in the assembly.
