Temperatures in some parts of southern Spain and France are expected to reach 40C on Saturday as authorities warn of heat with intensities and conditions usually only seen in mid-summer.
The state meteorological agency Aemet, warned that Spain is facing one of the hottest May months in history.
They added that a mass of hot and dry air is coming from Africa bringing dust from the Sahara with daily temperatures 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the season average.
“Friday and Saturday will be the hottest days of the month although there will be a drop in temperatures on Sunday on the west side of the peninsula,” authorities said, adding that temperatures would reach 40C in the Andalucía and Guadalquivir valleys. , which had not happened before in May.
Spain recorded its highest temperature last August with 47 degrees in the Andalusian city of Montoro.
Spring heat data show that France is also entering its 30th day of temperatures above normal with some parts reaching 33C which can rise to 37C at the end of the week.
