Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said today that official Madrid would support a “massive and powerful package” of economic measures against Russia if the latter attacks Ukraine.
Albares stressed that European countries have other sources besides the power to deter Russia from any military intervention by its troops in the neighboring country, including those that would have “major economic consequences and high costs” for Russia, reports Reuters.
“I will not go into details about the sanctions that European countries may impose, due to the need for confidentiality and the desire to maintain insecurity as an obstacle. “But I can assure you that it will be a big and powerful package,” Albares told the Spanish parliament today.
He also said that it seems that Russia is still committed to dialogue. “There is an impression that the Russian authorities want the dialogue to remain open at the moment, even though no concrete progress has been made,” said the Spanish minister.
Spain today warned its citizens not to travel to Kiev except in emergencies, but announced it would not evacuate more than 500 citizens from Ukraine, according to Reuters.
