Spain and London Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin said yesterday that it is ‘racist’ that the world turns a blind eye to conflicts around the world as all media attention is focused on the current Russia-Ukraine war.
The start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine last month reportedly caused thousands of deaths, while millions were forced to flee their homes.
But despite condemnation of Putin’s actions, Bellerin believes the media is paying attention only because it is happening in Europe, while other wars like the one in Yemen, Iraq or the conflict in Palestine are being overlooked.
“It’s hard to understand why they are more interested in this war than in others,” Bellerin told the Spanish network. The English Media.
“I do not know if it is because it affects us more economically or by refugees. “There is only silence about the war in Palestine, no one talks about it.”
“Yemen, Iraq… and now Russia can not play in the World Cup, but other countries have been banned for years.”
“It is racist to turn a blind eye to other conflicts, and now hold this position.”
“It also reflects a lack of sympathy for the lives lost in other conflicts and a prioritization of what is close to us.”
Bellerin is currently on loan from Arsenal to Real Betis, and is one of the few sports stars to have spoken out about the conflict in recent weeks.
His comments come as Russia has expressed interest in hosting the European Football Championships in 2028 or 2032.
