Sri Lankan MPs have elected the country’s new prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, to the post of president, despite his lack of public support.
Wickremesinghe will lead the country at an extraordinary time when the economy has collapsed and he must restore public order after mass protests in recent months, fueled by the economic situation.
The Parliament of Sri Lanka voted today for the election of the president and Wickremesinghe had Dullus Alahapperuma as his opponent.
Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country last week. He went first to the Maldives and then to Singapore, as thousands of protesters stormed the presidential palace and other government buildings, demanding his resignation.
Protesters have also called for the resignation of Wickremesinghe, who was appointed prime minister in May. Protesters burned his private home, but also attacked the prime minister’s office in Colombo, challenging his leadership.
Despite protesters repeatedly calling for Wickremesinghe’s resignation, he took over as acting president soon after Rajapaksa left.
Wickremesinghe will serve as president until November 2024.
