After the violent protests, the fugitive President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa submitted his resignation through an email sent to the speaker of the parliament.
Rajapaksa landed in Singapore on a flight from the Maldives earlier after leaving his country.
Singapore said Rajapaska had been allowed into the country on a “private visit” but had not sought or been granted asylum. Rajapaksa vowed to resign over the weekend after angry demonstrators stormed his official residence, swam in his swimming pool and demanded an end to his family’s ruling dynasty. Now the protesters are waiting for the resignation of the prime minister.
Meanwhile, the country remains on a knife’s edge. People have formed long queues waiting to fill their vehicles with diesel.
“I have been here for four days and I have not received a single liter. Innocent people are suffering from lack of petrol. We live thanks to gasoline. This is how we feed the children. There is no food or drink. A curfew has been imposed. We were hoping that the fuel was given yesterday”, says a citizen.
Politicians from other parties have talked about forming a new unity government, but there is still no sign that they are close to an agreement, and it is not yet known whether the new government will receive consent from the protesters.
