NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a “big mistake” with the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of the extraordinary NATO summit on March 24, Stoltenberg said the leaders would discuss “the need to reorganize prevention and defense in the long run.”
The military alliance has said it will double the number of deployments it has in Europe, citing Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
“President Putin has made a big mistake by launching a war against an independent and sovereign nation. He underestimated the strength of the Ukrainian people, the bravery of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces“, Stoltenberg told reporters before the meeting.
He said any use of comic weapons “would fundamentally change” the nature of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and violate international law.
“The seriousness of the use of chemical weapons naturally increases even more given the risk of poisoning… there may be a spread of chemical agents in NATO territory“, He said.
He did not say how NATO would react in the event of such an attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, reports REL.
The Kremlin action has sparked outrage and been condemned in many parts of the world. The United States and its allies have responded with harsh sanctions against Moscow.
