The Israeli Army Internal Command warned yesterday that a strong earthquake expected “sometime in the future” will leave thousands dead and injured in the country.
The army’s ominous post came in response to citizens’ comments about a series of earthquakes in northern Israel in recent months.
Two small earthquakes occurred on Wednesday with magnitude 3.5 and 3.1.
The epicenter of the first was in neighboring Jordan, about nine miles north of the city of Beit She’an.
The Israeli Civil Defense wrote in a statement: “A strong earthquake is expected to occur in the state of Israel that could cause a catastrophe with thousands dead and wounded, and severe damage to buildings and infrastructure.”
“The fact that there has not been a strong earthquake for a long time increases the chances that something like this will happen in Israel soon,” the military added.
Israel and the Palestinian territories rest on active Syrian-African seismic plates.
The region has a history of major earthquakes that occur nearly every 100 years; the most recent with major consequences was in 1927, where hundreds of people died in the region near the Dead Sea.
Last week Israel said it had installed an earthquake warning system, which does not anticipate them but notifies people at a distance from the epicenter to give them safe seconds to escape.
For example if an earthquake hits the Dead Sea, people in Jerusalem will have about three seconds more time to react, according to authorities.
