People who wear corrective glasses are three times more likely not to be affected by Covid-19, according to a new study in India.
The researchers had taken 304 samples from patients with Covid-19 at Kanpur Dehat Hospital, Uttar Pradesh, and found that of them, only 58 people (or 19 percent) wore glasses with numbers during the day.
Comparing these data with the general population, they estimated that this group of people were 2.8 times less likely to be infected with the coronavirus.
Study author Amit Kumar Saxena, an ophthalmologist from India’s anti-blindness program, suggested that one reason for the findings may be touching or rubbing the eyes as a way of transmitting the virus.
He added that the virus can pass from body fluids that protect the eye, to the upper part of the throat and further into the lungs, and to people who keep an eye on this less so as they tend to affect the eyes less.
The study has not yet received the necessary approvals but is based on patient reports of whether or not they wear glasses as well as clinical observations.
The authors noted that the number of patients tested was relatively small and the study was done in a short period of time. This is because there was a need to study other factors such as socio-economic ones, which suggest that people who do not wear glasses have less income or are less educated than the other group.
The patients were aged 10 to 80 years and none of them was seriously ill with coronavirus. The researchers found that people touched their face about 23 times every hour, including three times their eyes.
