The thermometer in some parts of Europe has started to mark over 40 degrees Celsius, fueling the outbreak of forest fires in Portugal and Spain.
300 Spanish firefighters, supported by 17 air tankers and helicopters, have been battling the flames that have burned 2,500 hectares of land in the eastern region of Extremadura.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised to increase forces and resources in the fight against fires, which he said are fueled by the climate emergency the planet is going through today.
On Thursday, the temperature in Seville, Spain is expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius, and during the weekend it will increase even more.
The situation is similar in neighboring Portugal, where several teams of firefighters are facing rebel hotbeds in the central Ourem region.
The entire country is in a state of alert, reminiscent of the wild forest fires of 2017, which claimed more than 100 lives.
The fires have gotten out of control in the Gironde of France, where hundreds of people have been evacuated, while the intervention to stop the flames seems difficult.
“The fires cannot be brought under control, the situation is not favorable. They took off from very dry and hot atmospheric conditions, while yesterday afternoon there was also a lot of wind. The flames spread at breakneck speed, threatening residential areas, so we had to evacuate several villages.”said Vincent Ferrier, sub-prefect of Langon.
A recent study shows unprecedented changes in the fire regime in Europe, related to the greenhouse effect.
The affected areas are in the south, in the center and in the north of Europe, but those in the Mediterranean area are considered greater in terms of intensity, almost historical.
Meanwhile, the Balkans, it seems that even this year is not properly prepared for the biggest threat of the summer, the fire season.
In its mountainous regions and remote islands, the use of tanker aircraft has proven to be of key importance in the past.
But it seems that only Greece has so far taken the situation seriously when it comes to guaranteeing such airlifts, as its fleet of aircraft and water-carrying helicopters exceeds that of all other countries in the region combined.
