The US ambassador to Moscow says Russia’s attack on Ukraine was an “act of massive aggression”.

Newly arrived from Moscow to Washington to attend the annual conference of US ambassadors, Ambassador John Sullivan said in an interview with VOA’s Russian-language service that everything is attributed to the decision of one person, Russian President Putin. to start this war.

“I just came back from Moscow last week for this conference and it is amazing how the world has been turned upside down since the Russian war, the aggression that started in late February. It is the subject of this conference of American ambassadors from all over the world, to make sure that the world knows and responds to this act of massive aggression and violent warfare on the European continent, with artillery shells and missiles falling on ancient cities in Europe. , images we thought we left behind in the 20th century, with innocent people being killed, women and children, hospitals and schools. “All this because the Russian government and President Putin decided to start a war of aggression, in an attempt to occupy an independent and sovereign country, or part of it, a UN member state.”said Ambassador Sullivan.

As repression of opposition activists and independent media continues in Russia, Ambassador Sullivan recently met at the Russian Foreign Ministry to protest threats against journalists working for US news agencies in Russia.

“I have been in Moscow for over two and a half years now, and from the day I arrived there has been an unstoppable avalanche of gradual repression of human rights, civil society, journalists, non-governmental organizations. A law was passed, for individuals and organizations, who are defined as foreign agents, or extremists, and people are forced to leave the country. These are loyal Russians, who have lived in the homeland all their lives, who love their country and who do not agree with the actions taken by their government. They are forced to leave the country if they are lucky. If not, they send them to labor camps for a while. “said Ambassador Sullivan.

To discuss the situation with the Allies, President Joe Biden will travel this weekend to Germany for the G-7 summit and then to Madrid for the NATO summit. Ambassador Sullivan says expectations are high.

“At every moment, the United States, its allies and partners, have demonstrated tremendous unity. I am confident in the outcome of the G-7 meeting and the meeting of NATO leaders. It was the fault of the Russian government and President Putin that they underestimated the unity of the NATO alliance, the United States and our partners in the EU. “It was a mistake, because we are united, and we will resist this aggression.”he said.

Ambassador Sullivan is also optimistic about the debate to reduce Europe’s interdependence on fuel and gas supplies from Russia.

“It’s a short-term problem that we will solve together, and we will not go wrong again by relying too much on an unstable, aggressive and hostile country like Russia.” he says.

Although Ambassador Sullivan is concerned that propaganda in Russia has presented the people with a very different picture of the war in Ukraine, he feels that something is beginning to change.

“I think there is a not-so-obvious feeling in Russia that something is wrong and that what is happening in Ukraine is wrong. They support their country. They love their army. But something goes wrong, and they know it; you can feel this secret sensation. People want to know: When will it stop? When will things return to normal? “And the message is that, unfortunately, it will not happen soon.” says Ambassador Sullivan./VOA
