Activists demand the annulment of the decision of the Municipality of Pristina that allows the Sunny Hill festival to be held in Parkun e Gërmia, on the grounds that it damages the environment.
In the complaint addressed to the mayor of Pristina and the Directorate of Parks, they say that the decision constitutes a legal violation, specifically the Law on the Protection of Nature. “As an organization that monitors the Directorate of Parks, we have not come across any public debate or call for participation in the decision. This is considered a legal violation”, it is clarified in their request. While they say that they base this on the damages of the past years.
“The degradation of biodiversity and the environment from the exploitation of the festival is shown by the facts from the past years, you have seen them all and when the facts exist and you make such a decision, then we are dealing with the criminal code chapter XXVII – criminal offenses against the environment, animals, plants and cultural objects. Article 338-Pollution, degradation or destruction of the environment”, argues the NGO Active Citizens.
The Sunny Hill music festival is expected to be held at the beginning of August in Germia Park in Pristina. The Mayor of the Municipality of Pristina, Përparim Rama has informed that the necessary permits have been secured for holding the festival in this park on August 4, 5, 6 and 7, 2022.
He added that Sunny Hill Festival has pledged that all the park space that will be used will be used with increased care, and that the cleaning and regeneration of the park “will be done in record time, even with the necessary investments from side of Sunny Hill Festival”.
A special edition with other singers will be held in Tirana on August 26, 27 and 28. The festival was founded by the Sunny Hill Foundation, of the world-famous singer, Dua Lipa, and the first edition was held in 2018.
