As he had announced, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi tendered his resignation on Thursday evening after his main tool in the Cinque Stele coalition withdrew his support in a huge vote of confidence on Thursday.
But President Matarella rejected it, giving him a chance to form a new majority government, and to avoid a further deepening of the political crisis.
The former head of the European Central Bank has led a unity government since February 2021. In a statement, he said the trust pact that had supported the unity government was gone.
But President Sergio Mattarella, who appointed Draghi to lead Italy’s post-pandemic recovery and rescue the country from endemic instability, has again called on him to address parliament to give a clear picture of the political situation.
The extraordinary developments in Rome capped a day of drama caused when Five Star leader Giuseppe Conte refused to back the government’s 23 billion euro (£19.5 billion) economic aid package for households and businesses, arguing that Draghi was not made enough to meet the cost of living crisis.
Although the government easily won Thursday’s vote in the Senate with the help of other parties, the man known as “Super Mario” had repeatedly warned that without the support of Five Star the government could not continue.
Draghi is expected to go to parliament next Wednesday and with enough support he can stay in office. If this scenario fails, early elections are a possibility.
