Two months after Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Security Council has for the first time agreed on a statement on the war in Ukraine and the surprise is that Moscow itself gave its green light.
The top UN body unanimously declared, including the approval of the aggressor country, that there was a “deep concern” about the conflict in Ukraine.
At the same time, the Security Council praised the mediation efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Although seen as a weak statement, it still represents a ray of hope that diplomacy at the UN is being set in motion.
“After the UN Secretary-General’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, this is a signal that Russia and the West are ready to give Guterres a chance at shuttle diplomacy.”said UN expert Richard Goan of the Crisis Group think tank for DW.
Following the aggression in Ukraine, Russia had thwarted all Security Council initiatives concerning its veto power.
Western diplomats speak of deep divisions in daily communication with Moscow representatives. The Security Council has 5 permanent members with veto power over the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom, as well as 10 non-permanent members.
