Sweden has recommended the fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine for residents over the age of 65, as well as for those living in nursing homes.
In this recommendation it is mentioned that the fourth dose can also be given to residents aged 18-64, who have weak immunity.
“The goal is, as before, to prevent serious illness and death from COVID-19,” said Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of the Swedish Public Health Agency.
She has said that taking the second boosting dose is necessary as infections in Sweden and other countries continue to rise and vaccine protection has begun to decline in older people.
“For people over the age of 65, it has now been four months since they received the pre-dose and vaccine protection has dropped over time,” she said.
For most of the pandemic, Sweden has had a different approach from European nations. It has never enforced isolation, nor has it closed businesses, leaving care in the hands of the residents themselves.
Although the number of coronavirus deaths in Sweden is higher than in other Nordic countries, the figures are lower than in many other European countries, which have implemented several isolation measures./ REL
