Sweden has joined Finland in its decision to apply for membership in the NATO military alliance as the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.
The announcement from Stockholm comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would “certainly” react to a possible NATO enlargement.
“The government has decided to inform NATO that Sweden wants to become a member of NATO. “Sweden’s ambassador to NATO will soon inform NATO,” said Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on May 16.
Sweden’s announcement comes a day after another Nordic country, Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, made a similar announcement. Finland, like Sweden, is a neutral country. Finland had lost close to 10 percent of its territory in the Soviet Union.
Despite being neutral states, both Finland and Sweden have made rapid moves to join the military alliance, as concerns have grown over Russia’s military aggression.
