German prosecutors said today they have filed charges against a Syrian refugee for killing one person and seriously injuring another in a knife attack motivated by Islamic extremism.
The murder suspect, named as Abdullah AHH, is charged with murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm motivated by “Islamic extremist beliefs”, Karlsruhe prosecutors said.
The two men, aged 55 and 53, were attacked in the eastern city of Dresden on October 4, 2020, while the oldest man later died at the hospital. The media said they were a gay couple.
The killer had chosen his two victims to be sentenced to death as representatives of a social order he rejected as “infidels”, prosecutors said in their argument.
The weekly Der Spiegel said the case is the first homophobic-motivated murder in Germany.
The suspect was 20 years old at the time of the attack, and was arrested in Dresden on 21 October.
The fatal attack has sparked debate over the deportation of foreign criminals from Germany, as the suspect was previously convicted and involved in extremist cases.
The refugee continued to live in Germany under ‘tolerated’ status for people who have been denied asylum but who cannot be deported for other reasons.
The Islamists have carried out several attacks in Germany in recent years, the most serious of which was the truck attack on the Christmas market in Berlin in December 2016 where 12 people were killed.
