Taliban fighters held a military parade in northwestern Afghanistan today, days after the government in Kabul sent troops to quell the unrest and arrest a militant commander.
Protests had erupted last week in Maimana, where an Uzbek Taliban commander was arrested in connection with a hostage-taking plot.
The riots have fueled fears of tensions between Uzbek and Pashtun ethnic groups, which have reportedly clashed.
“We have deployed hundreds of forces in neighboring provinces and the situation is already under control,” Defense Ministry official Latifullah Hakimi told AFP.
Sunday’s parade included rows of armed warriors disguised in headscarves with Muslim inscriptions.
Dozens of other heavily armed fighters paraded in pickup trucks and armored vehicles, taken by the U.S. military after it left in August.
Residents of the town of Maimana had come out on both sides of the street and recorded the parade with their cell phones.
One of them said: “Two days ago the situation is bad from the demonstrations but now it is normal.”
“The only problem is that there are no jobs, but we are certainly satisfied.”
