In compliance with the rules and laws of religious morality, Taliban rulers in Afghanistan were reported today to be demonstrating pressure by beheading mannequins who, in appearance, “offend the strict interpretation of religion.”
According to western media the owners of clothing stores in Herat province were ordered to cut off the mannequins’ heads as the statues could be considered ‘idols’.
Worship of the islands is considered a sin in Islam where the worship of any god other than Allah is forbidden, writes the British tabloid Daily Mail.
The ruling was announced this week by the local Ministry of Virtue Dissemination and Vices Prevention, which oversees the correct interpretation of the Islamic religion.
The ministry had originally ordered the mannequins removed but after shopkeepers complained about the demolition of the business, authorities withdrew seeking only the removal of their heads.
After hearing the complaints, ministry official Sheikh Aziz-u-Rahman tolerated clothing mannequins in stores.
Some other officials went even further by saying that only covering the dolls’ faces could be tolerated.
Abdul Wadood Faiz Zada told the Italian daily Repubblica: “Mannequin heads can be covered, not cut. A mannequin costs about $ 100 or $ 80 so breaking them would be a significant financial loss.
Shopkeeper Mohammad Yusuf reportedly commented: “The Taliban have not changed, they have not yet received international recognition, but if they do they will impose other restrictions.”
Since returning to power in Afghanistan in the summer, the Taliban have restored rights restrictions despite claiming to have been reformed.
Women and girls have been banned from moving freely in the city and some of them have been fired from their jobs.
At the same time music in vehicles as well as intoxicating substances are banned.
Meanwhile the country is in economic and humanitarian crisis and aid agencies say people are taking desperate measures to provide food.
