Barcelona and Argentina striker Sergio Aguero announced today his retirement from football at a tearful press conference, a month after being diagnosed with an unexplained heart problem and after a career of more than 15 years in professional football.
“I have decided to stop playing professional football. “It is a difficult moment but I am happy with the decision, my health comes first”, said the 33-year-old who had excelled for 10 years for the English team of Manchester City before leaving last season.
He signed a two-year deal with Barcelona but made just five appearances, scored a goal against Real Madrid, but was rushed to hospital with “chest pain” and shortness of breath during a match in Barcelona against Alaves in October.
Aguero was later diagnosed with a heart condition and was forced to admit he would never play football again.
“I made this decision because of the problems I had about a month ago. “The doctors treated me and advised me that the best thing I could do was not to play anymore.”
The Camp Nou stadium conference was attended by Barcelona team-mates, his former Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain.
“I did everything I could to keep the hopes alive but there was no hope.”
Aguero, better known by his nickname ‘Kun’, began his career with the Independiente team in his native Argentina before coming to Europe in 2006 with Atletico Madrid in Spain.
Aguero’s withdrawal comes months after Denmark striker Christian Eriksen suffered a heart attack on the pitch while playing for his national team against Finland in June.
Other athletes have ended their careers early or lost their lives to similar problems, a phenomenon that has increased significantly in the last year.
