A tragic action by Brazilian police in a poor urban area in Rio favela left 11 people dead yesterday, Brazilian authorities announced.
Military police said they were in pursuit of gunfire as they entered the favela called Vila Cruzeiro in the north of the city, with the objective of locating and arresting criminal leaders.
In the ensuing gunfight, police said “10 suspected criminals were killed, and a female resident hit by a blind bullet.”
Two injured are being treated at the hospital, authorities announced.
Brazilian police regularly conduct raids on overcrowded urban areas of Rio to maintain control of crime and drug trafficking.
They added that this time they were looking for apartment managers who had come to hide in Vila Cruzeiro from other parts of Brazil.
This was the deadliest police raid in Rio in a year.
Last May, police raided a favela called Jacarezinho, killing 28 people, including a police officer. This was the largest number of lives lost in the history of the city.
The local G1 network said yesterday’s attack targeted Comando Vermelho (Red Command), one of Brazil’s most powerful gangs.
Police said gun battles took place in the high areas of the favela and in the surrounding areas.
