The British Air Force launched its bombers after reports that four Russian military aircraft were approaching the UK.
British military leaders said four Russian strategic bombers had been “captured and escorted”, adding that they had never been able to enter British airspace.
The British Typhoon aircraft took off from British Air Force bases in Lossiemouth, northeastern Scotland, and were joined by an air-powered tanker aircraft, the Voyager departing from Oxfordshire, England. Authorities did not provide further details on the operation.
The British Air Force says it is constantly catching planes approaching what they describe as a “UK area of interest”.
In November last year, British planes took off immediately in response to the approach of Russian strategic bombers. Even in that case, the provocation ended without compromising British airspace, and Russian planes were escorted out of the area of interest, but that did not stop them from continuing to try again.
