The alarm bells of the American Embassy in Albania about a possible threat targeting a summit organized by the Iranian opposition in exile, to be held in Durrës, did not fall on deaf ears.
In fact, the threat seems to be considered so serious that the Albanian government has requested the postponement of the World Summit for a Free Iran, a very important event for the Iranian opposition.
The request of the Albanian executive has been accepted by the leaders of the National Council of Iranian Resistance.
“The Free Iran World Summit scheduled to be held on July 23rd and 24th in Ashraf 3, Albania, is postponed until further notice at the recommendation of the Albanian government and due to terrorist threats and conspiracies of the mullahs’ regime” , it is stated in the announcement of the Secretariat of this council.
Currently, around 3,000 MEK members are estimated to live in Camp Ashraf-3, a heavily fortified compound.
For the first time, the mujahedin started coming to Albania in 2013 after an agreement with the then Albanian government, led by Sali Berisha.
The political organization aligned on the opposite side with the regime of the ayatollahs of Iran, is in open conflict with it and is persecuted even in exile.
The group is targeted by the Iranian National Guard. Various reports show that the Iranian secret service has also recruited Albanian citizens to keep the mujahedin of the MEK under surveillance, and for this they were paid by Tehran.
Since 2018, a file has been opened that talks about the risk of a possible strike in Albania. Three years ago, the plans of an Iranian terrorist cell that claimed to carry out a terrorist attack in our country on the day of Sultan Nowruz were revealed in the World Bektashi Supreme Court.
Four foreign nationals with Iranian citizenship were then escorted to the police. In January 2020, two diplomats were declared ‘non grata’ and expelled from Albania at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Tirana, due to “the development of activity inconsistent with their status and the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations”.
The announcement stated that the two diplomats “had attempted to carry out activities against the mujahideen community” in Manza.
