US carmaker Tesla has been criticized in the United States for opening a store to display its products.
In this region, Chinese officials are accused of abusing members of the Uighur minority.
Tesla, led by billionaire Elon Musk, has announced it will open a store in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, a week after US President Joe Biden signed legislation requiring companies to certify that goods imported from Xinjiang , are not a product of forced labor.
The United States, several Western countries, and human rights groups accuse China of committing genocide against Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang through forced labor, population control, and the elimination of faith and culture among minorities.
Beijing denies the allegations, saying it runs “re-education camps” to fight Islamic extremism.
US Republican Marco Rubio said on Twitter that “stateless corporations are helping the Communist Party of China to cover up the genocide and slave labor in the region.”
In a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Tesla to close its stores and “equate to financial support for genocide.”
Tesla has not yet made any public comment on this.
Other car companies, including Volkswagen, General Motors and Nissan Motor, also have stores in Xinjiang, which are run by Chinese associates.
Volkswagen also has a plant in Urumqi.
