Even faster than thought; The French Minister for European Affairs, Clement Beaune, stated that EU member states could reach an agreement this week on the European Commission’s proposal to ban all oil imports from Russia.
“I think we will have a bargain these days,” he told LCI television. The minister added that French President Emmanuel Macron, later on May 10, will talk to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the issue, and will apparently try to persuade Vladimir Putin’s ally not to block the initiative.
Hungary is the biggest critic of the embargo on Russian oil in the EU. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also claims to have made progress in talks with Orban on the issue. On May 4, Von der Leyen presented the EC proposal as part of the sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia over its occupation of Ukraine.
The Commission predicts that the EU will completely give up Russian crude oil and refined products by the end of the year. But to approve this sixth package of sanctions requires the unanimous support of the 27 member states of the European bloc.
