“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
Fans will rejoice at the return of the wildly popular fantasy franchise The Lord of The Rings. We go back to the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit, to see how the Rings of Power were created. There will be some familiar characters like Galadriel, played by an ethereal Morfydd Clark, as well as Elrond and Isildur, who appeared in the original trilogy. With the Game of Thrones House of the Dragon trailer also on the horizon, it’s time for a truly magical escape. On Prime Video from September 2.
“Inside Man”
This is the BBC’s flagship drama for the autumn. Spanning four episodes, the series follows an inmate on America’s death row, a vicar in a sleepy English village, and a teacher trapped in a basement as each of their narratives begin to intertwine in surprising ways. With Stanley Tucci, Lydia West, David Tennant and Dolly Wells all starring, expect some award-worthy series. On the BBC from September.
“Daisy Jones & The Six”
Not-so-secretly inspired by the turbulent history of rock band Fleetwood Mac, this is the story of the (unexpected) rise and fall of a fictional band trying to make it in LA in the 1970s based on the bestselling book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The cast is a diverse group of cool girls: Riley Keough, Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse; with appearances from Sam Claflin and Josh Whitehouse as well. Fans of the book will know it’s an over-the-top rock ‘n’ roll riot. On Prime Video from September.
“Pantheon”
Maude Apatow and Paul Dano lend their voices to this animated thriller, based on the short stories by Ken Liu. It follows Maddie, a teenager who is being bullied and gets help from a mysterious stranger online. Pantheon promises to be as creepy as an episode of Black Mirror, delving into the worlds of artificial intelligence and the ethical order of a dystopian future. One for all sci-fi fans. On AMC in the fall
“Irma Vep”
Alicia Vikander stars as a movie star turned crime fighter in this series inspired by director Olivier Assayas’ 1996 film of the same name. Blurring the lines between life and art, Vep finds himself living in a world of crime and fending off corruption. Expect an action-packed, rock ‘n’ roll thriller with an exciting cast of rising stars including Adria Arjona and Devon Ross; Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein also makes an appearance. On HBO!
“Everything I Know About Love”
In 2018, Dolly Alderton’s tumultuous memoir Everything I Know About Love became the definitive millennial handbook on friendship, failure, passion, first times and everything in between. Now, it’s been adapted into a seven-part series by Alderton and Working Title Films, the romcom factory behind Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually starring Emma Appleton (Pistol) and Bel Powley (The Morning Show). playing the best two. “Only Murders in the Building” – the second season
Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin return for the next series of this hilarious world, following three neighbors and true crime buffs who become embroiled in their own real-life murder mystery. Expect a healthy dose of humor and punchlines as iconic as the cast members. Plus, this season welcomes new guest stars Amy Schumer and Cara Delevingne. On Hulu!
“House of the Dragon”
No other series has quite filled the space left behind by Game of Thrones, but House of the Dragon, the trailer for George RR Martin’s blockbuster series, may come close. Set 200 years before the fall of the throne, House of the Dragon chronicles the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty, with Paddy Considine playing the King and Matt Smith as his rogue son. Supporting roles from Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke and Sonoya Mizuno (plus some dragons at the start) are sure to help this series go stratospheric. On HBO Max from August 21!
“Industry” – the second season
The first season had the adrenaline levels of a Bruce Willis movie, so expect a similar energy from the second series, which sees Pierpoint Bank-scale schemers return for more all-nighters, power politics and the oppression of numbers. Indeed, its cast of newcomers is well on its way to becoming household names, with lead Myha’la Herrold landing a role in Bodies Bodies Bodies, an indie horror based on a script by Kristen Roupenian and the bad guy at the bank Harry. Lawtey stars in The Pale Blue Eye alongside Christian Bale and Lucy Boynton. On BBC iPlayer and HBO from August!
“The Sandman”
This adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s cult comic is worth the wait, and not just for fans of political fantasy. Those who follow a thoroughly modern approach to gender roles and literary stereotypes will also be fascinated. The seven immortal siblings playing with each other and humanity include Dream (the eponymous Sandman, played by Tom Sturridge) In short, it’s irresistible. On Netflix from August!
“Anatomy of a Scandal”
Adapted from Sarah Vaughan’s best-selling courtroom novel, the six-episode series focuses on two women caught up in a major political scandal. A rising Tory MP, James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend), is accused of raping his parliamentary assistant, Olivia (Naomi Scott), a charge he vehemently denies. Michelle Dockery comes in strong as the prosecuting attorney, while Sienna Miller plays Whitehouse’s privileged wife, Sophie, who is struggling with the social, marital and ethical consequences. The many flashbacks to their Oxford University days full of sex, drugs and clubbing make it feel closer to fact than fiction. On Netflix!
“Pistol”
Take a deep dive into the heady days of punk rock in this Danny Boyle-directed drama about the rise of the Sex Pistols. The six-part series follows the main actors at the heart of the punk subculture in 1970s London: Jonny Rotten, the lead singer played by a boisterous Anson Boon, Emma Appleton as the ill-fated Nancy Spungen, Sydney Chandler as the lead singer of The Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde, and Maisie Williams as the model Jordan Mooney often called the first “Sex Pistol”. On FX Networks!
“The Staircase”
Based on the true-crime documentary of the same name, the eight-part HBO series dramatizes the life and conviction of writer Michael Peterson (Colin Firth), who is investigated for the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen (Toni Collette). after she was found at the bottom of the stairs in their family home. The series is written and produced by Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time) and Maggie Cohn (American Crime Story) and Sophie Turner also stars as one of Peterson’s daughters. On HBO Max!
