A British-made anti-aircraft missile has been used, according to some reports, to shoot down a Russian helicopter for the first time in Ukraine.
The Times of London says a video circulated online shows the Starstreak high-speed missile system hitting a Russian Mi-28N military helicopter over the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. The video, the authenticity of which Insider could not confirm, appears that points to the rocket the moment it hits the helicopter causing its tail to break.
The Starstreak is Britain’s most advanced mobile missile system, which shipped a cargo to Ukraine in March along with its next-generation NLAW light anti-tank weapons. Starstreak is aimed at its target by three laser beam signals, according to The Times. It can also be fired from the shoulder and hit targets up to 4 miles away.
To express their gratitude for the British armaments, two Ukrainian families have made a special gesture. Two babies born these days have been given the names of English surface-to-air missiles, one was a boy and was named Yan Javelin, while the other is a girl and was christened Javelina.
Unusual names were registered in Vinnytsia Oblast, according to former Ukrainian First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko, who described it as a kind of thanksgiving for Western weapons being sent to Ukraine.
