The thief was caring for the elderly woman with Parkinson’s degenerative disease, but was spending her money indiscriminately on networks like Amazon and eBay, increasingly putting the person she cared for into debt with the bank.
The selfish 32-year-old Nicola Brimage had taken more than 6,000 pounds from the 78-year-old woman’s account with Parkinson, leaving the retiree shocked and overdrafted with the bank, the daily wrote. Liverpool Echo reports.
Brimage spent the money on entertainment items on Amazon, eBay and PayPal, using her and her senior name and details more than 300 times for purchases.
In court yesterday in Liverpool, Brimage complained that he “could not stop” the fixed wave of spending.
When the victim’s statement was read in court, Brimage began to cry.
Prosecutor Paul Blasbery said: “The victim had given Nicolas a lot of confidence. She respected and liked him for the service he had rendered to her. “When she found out that Nicola had stolen all this money, she was shocked.”
“She thought she could trust Nicola and the other caregivers. The woman said she had once lent Nicolas pa 50 when she told him she had run out of money, but she again took advantage of her weakness.
In court it was said that Brimage was helping the victim do the shopping and withdraw money with the vending machine card, although this fud is against the rules of the care agency for which Brimage worked.
The thefts had occurred between February 2021 and July 2021, and were exposed when the bank contacted the woman to tell her that her account had been overdrafted by purchases and withdrawals.
Crime investigators said the elderly woman’s caregiver had used her name in purchases totaling, 5,948.50.
The prosecution said the items purchased by Brimage were not “essential living items” but “general household appliances and luxury items”.
Brimage had no previous convictions.
Defense attorney Ben Berkson said: “Nothing I will say can justify the cold-blooded crime that has been committed, but Brimage is a young girl who has spent a lot of time caring for the weakest and at the time of the crimes she was in a low personal and psychological period ”.
The defense added that Brimage had suffered from the violence of an ex-partner and was subsequently diagnosed with anxiety and depression.
Judge Michael Blakey sentenced Brimage to 12 months in prison, suspended, as well as 80 hours of unpaid work and a 15-day rehabilitation program.
